Diving Con Ed February’13

In the next couple of weeks we will be running the following courses:

Rescue diver $350 - 12 dives – starts 26/1

Advanced diver $350 - 7 dives – starts 2/2

Freediving $450 – 2 sea dive sessions, plus pool sessions – starts 23/2

Open Water (learn to dive) – 11 sea dives, plus pool sessions – starts 6/2

Bring ‘em back alive

As you probably know about 10 days ago some vandals tried to poison the fish in the tanks of the Marine Education Centre (MEC) at the bait house in Island Bay. Most of the large specimens were saved but most of the small stuff didn’t survive the attack. MEC needs more specimens of small size – things like Nudibranchs and other little critters which you think children would enjoy seeing.

If you want to help, take a medium sized clear zip-lock plastic bag on your dive for your choice of specimen. Once you are out of the water transfer the unit to the biggest practically sized container and text Julian on 021-585-370. He will arrange to meet you as soon as possible at the MEC to arrange it’s rehabilitation.

Dive HMNZS Canterbury and Poor Knights

Dive Guys are organising a trip to Northland for a couple of days diving (Wed 22/5 – Sat 25/5) and want to know if we have anyone that wants to come along. Cost is $365 per person, or $750 for couples. Itinerary is 3 reef dives & 1 x dive on the Frigate Canterbury, includes 2 days tank hire & weights, 3 nights accommodation (bedding provided), 3 breakfasts and two lunches & three dinners.

It maybe that there is enough interest to extend the trip to a day out to Poor Knights on Monday as well. If you are interested in this please reply as soon as poss on Facebook.

Summer shop hours

Summer hours start today. The shop is now on summer hours for six months.

Open 7 days a week, 9am to 6pm. That’s 60+ hours a week to ensure you can hire gear, no wait airfills from Wellington’s biggest compressor, get gear serviced, do boat trips, do club dives, buy scuba/ freedive/ spearo gear with a 12 month guarantee (abuse conditions apply) and do diver training to any level.

Next freediving course is 16-18 November

Sebastian Krammer (SSI Freediving Instructor) is running another basic Freediving course , at the Kilbernie Aquatic Centre. This starts Friday night 16/11 and finishes Sunday 18/11.

This introductory course covers 4 hours of academics, 2 hours of pool training, 4 hours of sea sessions , plus a final exam. Training materials are provided for the course and SSI certification cards will be issued to successful participants.

If freediving is of interest to you , contact the shop for full details about the course. The minimum age is 18 (14 years if you are with a parent or guardian).

If you are catching crayfish at the moment you need to check they are not in soft shell. Along the South Coast for the next couple of weeks, male crayfish are shedding their old shell as they grow bigger. It is illegal to take a crayfish when it is in ‘soft shell phase’. If you are not sure how to tell a cray’s sex or what the regulations are, click on http://www.fish.govt.nz/en-nz/Recreational/Fishery+Management+Areas/Challenger/Rock+Lobster.htm. Often one of the last parts parts to harden on a cray body is the panel just above the legs.

Next Beach Clean Up – Sunday 16 September

Beach clean up

The South Coast Combined Clean up Coalition is doing their annual beach clean on 16/9/12. Our sector is Island Bay West, but there are 12 sectors along the coast from Quarry gates to Pass of Branda, so you can pick your location of preferance.

Bags, gloves, instructions etc. will be issued at the 12 briefing sites and the rubbish collected will be moved by the WCC. This year’s clean up is being run in conjunction with the Council’s ‘Year of the Coast’.

There will be a free BBQ afterwards for helpers. If you want to join us drop us a note on FB or email tim@ibdivers.co.nz.

Scallop Season opens this Sunday .

The scallop season starts this Sunday (15/7) and runs for seven months. This season finishes on St Valentine’s day 14 February 2014.

Don’t forget.. shore divers in the Wellington area have a limit of 20 per person provided the shellfish are at least above the minimum size of 100 mm across their widest point. There are different quotas for local boat divers, and for other national regions.

Nuie Island Trip 2012.

There is a tiny island in the South Pacific that is in the middle of the spring migration track for whales in our hemisphere.

Many say it has the best visibility in the world because of it’s isolation and the lack of any rivers on the island.

This Island is Nuie and IB Divers is running a trip there at the height of the migration (September 1-7).
